Engineering resume keywords should identify the discipline, technical work, tools, and evidence behind your contribution. Start with the actual role: mechanical design, electrical design, testing, manufacturing, systems, or another specialty. Then choose relevant methods such as CAD, requirements analysis, prototyping, verification, failure analysis, or design documentation only when your work supports them.

A mechanical engineer and an electrical engineer may both test a prototype, but they test different things. A useful resume names the object, constraint, method, and result instead of treating “engineering” as a single interchangeable skill set.
Shared engineering terms need discipline-specific context
| Shared term | What a reader needs to know | |---|---| | Design | What component, circuit, assembly, or system did you design? | | Requirements | Which functional, environmental, manufacturing, or interface constraints did you work from? | | Analysis | Which model, calculation, dataset, or method did you use? | | Testing | What was measured, under what conditions, and against which acceptance criteria? | | Documentation | Drawings, specifications, test reports, change records, or instructions? | | Collaboration | Which interface did you manage: manufacturing, suppliers, software, quality, or customers? |
The BLS mechanical engineering profile describes design, prototypes, testing, and analysis. Its electrical and electronics profile covers electrical or electronic systems, requirements, testing, and related documentation. These are broad occupational descriptions; the posting determines which work matters for a specific application.
Mechanical engineering resume keywords
Consider terms such as mechanical design, CAD, drawings, tolerance analysis, prototyping, test fixtures, manufacturing support, design reviews, root-cause analysis, and engineering change documentation. More specialized methods—finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, thermal analysis, or geometric dimensioning and tolerancing—belong only when you actually used them and can explain the work.
A skills section might read:
Design and analysis: Mechanical CAD, assembly drawings, tolerance-stack review, prototype testing. Tools: SolidWorks, MATLAB, Excel. Delivery: Design reviews, test documentation, manufacturing handoffs.
Do not list every CAD package because their purpose is similar. Experience in one tool is transferable, but it is not experience in another. If a method was used only in coursework, label that context.
Mechanical example: show the engineering chain
Fictional experience example:
Mechanical Engineer — Example Equipment Systems August 2022–September 2026
- Developed CAD models and assembly drawings for a mounting bracket, incorporating envelope and service-access constraints supplied by the project team.
- Built a prototype test plan with the lead engineer, recorded deflection measurements, and compared results with the agreed acceptance criteria.
- Investigated assembly interference reported by manufacturing, reviewed the tolerance stack, and prepared a drawing revision for approval.
- Maintained the design-change record and communicated the released revision to purchasing and production contacts.
The sequence is requirements, design, test, investigation, and controlled change. It does not claim the engineer certified safety, approved every release, or independently owned the entire product.
Electrical and electronics resume keywords
Depending on the role, relevant terms may include circuit design, schematics, PCB layout, instrumentation, power systems, controls, embedded interfaces, signal analysis, test procedures, troubleshooting, and technical documentation. Use the discipline's actual vocabulary; power-distribution work and embedded-electronics work are not the same specialty.
A junior electronics applicant might write:
Technical work: Schematic review, bench testing, basic circuit analysis, test documentation. Tools: Oscilloscope, multimeter, SPICE simulation, Python for test-data analysis. Projects: Clearly identify academic or personal prototypes separately from employment.
A power-systems applicant would choose different tools and evidence. Do not add a standard, license, or high-voltage qualification because it appears in a keyword list.
Electrical example: make testing concrete
Fictional example:
- Prepared a bench-test procedure for a sensor interface, documenting supply conditions, measurement points, and expected output ranges.
- Captured oscilloscope traces during intermittent failures and compared observed behavior with the schematic and test assumptions.
- Worked with the senior engineer to isolate a connector-related fault, then recorded the corrective change and retest results.
- Wrote a concise test report linking observations to the agreed acceptance criteria and unresolved limitations.
This example demonstrates technical investigation without claiming an unsupported product outcome. If the test was a university project, place it under Projects and name the course or project context. If the procedure required supervised access, do not imply independent authorization.
Engineering metrics should describe the comparison
Useful measures may include dimensions, loads, tolerances, test coverage, cycle time, scrap, reliability observations, or energy use. Include only measurements you can explain and disclose. “Improved efficiency 25%” needs a defined system, baseline, test conditions, and contribution.
A credible fictional statement is: “Reduced fixture setup time from 18 to 12 minutes in the documented trial by replacing two manual alignment steps.” It tells the reader what changed and where the evidence came from. It does not imply a production-wide result unless that broader deployment was measured.
When a result belongs to a team, name your part. “Designed the fixture used in the trial” and “led the production rollout” describe different contributions. Keep the distinction even when both occurred on the same project.
Entry-level resumes: projects can carry the evidence
A strong project entry includes the problem, constraints, your role, method, validation, and limitation. It should be possible to discuss a design decision and an error or tradeoff without reading the resume.
For example: “Designed a tabletop sorting mechanism for a four-person capstone team; modeled the frame, checked interference in the assembly, and documented failed trials before revising the guide geometry.” The team size and details are illustrative. Use your real record.
Avoid claiming “industry experience” from a simulated assignment. Include a portfolio or repository only when you have permission to share the material. Remove employer drawings, proprietary code, export-controlled material, customer specifications, and confidential test data from public examples.
Licenses, standards, and approval authority
State credentials exactly and verify current status. An engineering degree, an engineer-in-training status, and a professional engineering license are different. Jurisdiction and role requirements vary; follow the relevant authority and employer instructions.
Likewise, exposure to a standard does not mean you are certified to it or authorized to approve compliance. A precise statement is “Prepared test records for review against the project's specified requirements” when that describes your role. Do not substitute a standards acronym for evidence of what you did.
Tailor one resume to one engineering job
Create a short map from each central requirement to a work or project example. Put the most relevant discipline evidence first, preserve actual titles and dates, and remove tools that you cannot discuss at the expected level.
Use the job description keyword extractor to identify terminology and the resume keyword matcher to inspect wording. For software-focused roles, use the separate software engineer resume guide; this page focuses on physical and electrical engineering evidence.
Should I include every engineering software package I studied?
No. Prioritize current, relevant capability. Label coursework or introductory exposure where it would otherwise imply professional proficiency.
Can a technician use engineering keywords?
Use accurate task language such as testing, troubleshooting, drawings, or equipment maintenance. Preserve your actual title and do not imply design or approval authority you did not hold.
Do I need a separate resume for electrical and mechanical jobs?
If you are qualified for both, tailor the emphasis to the actual responsibilities. Keep the same factual history while changing the order and detail of relevant evidence.
