A portfolio link earns space when it reduces uncertainty about your work. The destination must be ready for an unannounced, time-limited review.

Put a portfolio link in the contact block when the portfolio is central to the occupation and the landing page is ready. You can also place a deep link beside a relevant project or role. Use a clean visible domain or descriptive text, test the hyperlink in the exported PDF, and make the strongest relevant work reachable in one or two clicks. Omit the link when the site is broken, confidential, outdated, or weaker than the resume.
A portfolio is not limited to visual design. Writers, engineers, researchers, marketers, educators, analysts, and operators can use authorized case studies or public artifacts when those reduce an evidence gap.
Run the CLICK preflight
Check Contribution, Load, Integrity, Context, and Key relevance.
| Check | Pass condition | |---|---| | Contribution | Your role is separable from team output | | Load | Page opens quickly on mobile and desktop | | Integrity | Links, media, dates, and claims work and agree with resume | | Context | Problem, constraints, decisions, and outcome are understandable | | Key relevance | First visible work matches the target role |
Test logged out and in a private window. A portfolio that works only inside your account is not a usable application artifact.
Choose contact-level and project-level links
A single portfolio homepage in the contact line signals a broad body of work. Deep links beside selected projects reduce navigation for a specific role. You can use both when the architecture supports it, but avoid filling the resume with raw URLs.
Use descriptive linked text such as “Product onboarding case study” while preserving a recognizable domain for print. Do not rely only on a QR code. CareerOneStop includes portfolio links among useful top-section details when relevant; they should supplement, not replace, contact information and resume evidence.
For GitHub, publications, or video, link to a curated profile or case page when a raw repository or channel requires too much interpretation.
Worked example: two clicks become one
Sofia's design resume links to her homepage, which opens with an animation reel and hides case studies under a small menu. Her strongest B2B onboarding project takes four clicks to find and describes only the final screens.
She adds a resume deep link called “B2B onboarding redesign.” The case study loads quickly and explains research constraints, Sofia's decisions, team roles, accessibility work, and measured completion improvement. The homepage remains in the contact block for broader review.
For a brand-design role, she changes the deep link to a different project. The facts do not change; the entry point reflects the target decision. A reader can still explore the full site if interested.
Protect confidential work and shared credit
Obtain permission before showing employer or client material. Remove private user data, internal metrics, source code, unreleased strategy, and security information. If the public result can be named but process cannot, write a high-level case with approved details or use a personal demonstration.
- State your individual contribution and collaborators.
- Distinguish concept work from shipped work.
- Label self-initiated redesigns; do not imply client commission.
- Explain measurement limits.
- Provide captions or transcripts for relevant media.
- Remove tracking or edit-mode URLs.
A redacted screenshot without context is rarely strong evidence. Confidentiality-safe judgment can itself demonstrate professionalism.
Maintain the destination as part of the application system
Check links monthly during an active search and before every important submission. Renew domains, update certificates, compress oversized media, and create a useful 404 page. Preserve old case-study URLs when possible so submitted resumes do not decay.
Use analytics only with appropriate privacy choices and do not interpret one page view as a hiring signal. Recruiters may view through protected systems that obscure tracking. The portfolio must stand on its content.
If maintenance is impossible, a stable PDF sample or well-structured repository may be better than a fragile site. The link's job is to make relevant evidence easier to inspect, not to prove technical sophistication through complexity.

Portfolio expectations vary by occupation and employer. Links may not be opened, and analytics cannot reliably identify reviewers; never expose confidential material in pursuit of visibility. Editorial review: September 6, 2026.

Questions readers usually ask
Where should a portfolio link go?
Usually in the contact block, with optional deep links beside the most relevant project or role.
Can I use a Google Drive folder?
Only if view permissions, filenames, privacy, and navigation are reliable. A curated landing document is often easier to review than a raw folder.
Should non-designers have portfolios?
Only when authorized artifacts or case studies strengthen evaluation. Analysts, writers, engineers, and others can benefit when work is inspectable.
Can I show confidential projects?
Not without permission. Use approved sanitized context or different work rather than risking client or employer information.
