Sales resume keywords should explain what you sold, to whom, at which stage, and with what responsibility. Common terms include prospecting, lead qualification, discovery, account management, pipeline management, forecasting, negotiation, renewals, and CRM. Select the terms that describe your actual role rather than copying an entire sales vocabulary list.
An SDR who qualifies opportunities, an account executive who closes business, and an account manager who handles renewals have related but different evidence. A resume should make those distinctions visible before presenting a performance number.
Match the vocabulary to your sales role
| Role or task | Useful terms | Evidence to include | |---|---|---| | Sales development | Prospecting, outbound outreach, qualification, appointment setting | Target segment, qualification criteria, accepted handoff | | Account executive | Discovery, proposals, negotiation, closing, pipeline management | Deal context, decision process, commercial responsibility | | Account management | Account planning, renewals, retention, expansion | Portfolio scope, customer needs, renewal contribution | | Sales operations | CRM data quality, reporting, forecasting support, territory analysis | Process maintained, checks performed, stakeholders served | | Technical sales | Product demonstrations, needs analysis, technical proposals | Product knowledge, buyer problem, collaboration with specialists |
The O*NET technical and scientific sales profile describes work involving customer needs, product capabilities, records, proposals, and commercial discussions. Use that as occupational context; your own job may cover only part of the cycle.
Metrics need definitions
Quota attainment is useful when you can explain the quota type and period. Revenue, bookings, annual recurring revenue, gross margin, and pipeline are not interchangeable. A pipeline figure is not closed revenue. A meeting count is not the number of accepted opportunities unless that was the actual definition.
A clear fictional example is: “Reached 108% of the annual new-business bookings target for the assigned mid-market territory.” A weaker version is “Generated millions” with no period, scope, or ownership. If the figures are confidential, use approved ranges or describe territory and process instead.
For percentages, keep the denominator and comparison in your evidence notes. “Renewed 19 of 20 eligible accounts during the quarter” is easier to explain than an unexplained 95% retention claim. Do not mix customer retention with revenue retention or omit a material portfolio change.
Three useful bullet patterns
Prospecting: “Researched operations leaders at regional manufacturers, tailored outreach around inventory-planning problems, and documented qualification notes before account-executive handoff.”
Closing: “Led discovery and proposal preparation for mid-market accounts, coordinated technical reviews, and negotiated commercial terms within approved pricing boundaries.”
Account management: “Prepared quarterly account reviews, recorded adoption risks and open commitments, and coordinated renewal actions with customer success and finance.”
These are fictional patterns. Replace the segment, workflow, and responsibility with your own. Add genuine results where available; do not attach a company-wide growth number to an individual activity without a defensible connection.
A sales-development experience example
Sales Development Representative — Example Workflow Software January 2024–September 2026
- Built prospect lists for the assigned manufacturing segment using the team's account criteria and verified contact research.
- Conducted discovery calls to establish current workflow, stakeholder involvement, and the reason for evaluating a change.
- Recorded qualification notes and agreed next steps in Salesforce before transferring accepted opportunities to account executives.
- Reviewed declined handoffs with the sales manager and adjusted research questions to reduce recurring qualification gaps.
This entry shows commercial judgment without pretending the candidate closed the business. If you have verified accepted-opportunity or conversion figures, they can strengthen it. An activity count alone should not obscure whether the work reached the right accounts.
CRM skills: user, analyst, or administrator?
Name the CRM and the tasks you performed. Maintaining records, building reports, defining routing rules, and administering permissions are different capabilities. “Salesforce” in Skills should not imply you are a Salesforce administrator unless you have that experience.
A specific statement might be “Salesforce: opportunity updates, activity logging, and pipeline reports.” If you helped improve data quality, explain the mechanism: reviewed stale close dates, corrected duplicate records through the approved process, or standardized required handoff fields.
Use the computer-skills guide to express capability without vague ratings.
Moving into sales from another field
Look for customer discovery, product explanation, objection handling, follow-up, or commercial coordination in your existing work. Retail experience may demonstrate needs assessment; customer support may demonstrate problem diagnosis and clear communication. Neither automatically establishes quota-carrying experience.
A transition summary could say: “Customer-service professional moving into sales development, with experience clarifying customer needs, explaining product options, and maintaining accurate follow-up records.” Then show the relevant work under the real job title. Do not rename support cases “sales opportunities” if they were not.
Senior sales resumes need operating scope
For a manager, add team size, hiring or coaching responsibility, territory design, forecast ownership, and the decisions you made. Distinguish personal quota from team performance. “Managed a six-person team” should mean genuine management responsibility, not informal peer support.
If a result came from pricing changes, territory reassignment, market growth, or an inherited pipeline, keep your contribution accurate. Strong commercial writing can acknowledge context while still showing decisions and execution.
Make the resume specific to the vacancy
Read the posting for market segment, sales motion, product complexity, cycle length, and ownership. A transactional inbound role and an enterprise consultative role need different examples. Use the keyword matcher to inspect terminology against the posting, then review each match for truth.
For specialist regulated-product work, the pharmaceutical sales guide separates commercial evidence from claims of clinical authority. For general selection principles, see resume keywords by role.
Should I use “hunter” or “farmer”?
Concrete language is clearer: new-account prospecting, account development, renewals, or expansion. Use the employer's shorthand only if the meaning remains clear.
Can I include a team award?
Yes, label it as a team award and explain your contribution. Do not turn shared recognition into an individual ranking.
What if I cannot disclose sales figures?
Describe approved scope, buyer segment, sales stage, responsibilities, and process improvements. Confidentiality is not a reason to invent substitute metrics.
