An accounting resume should make your financial work easy to verify: the accounts or processes you handled, the checks you performed, the systems you used, and your level of responsibility. Reconciliation, accounts payable, accounts receivable, month-end close, financial reporting, audit support, and tax work are different functions. Choose the ones you actually performed.

Choose the accounting lane
The BLS accountants and auditors profile covers financial records, analysis, reporting, and related responsibilities. Accounting jobs vary considerably. Your resume should show the actual function rather than using the occupational description as a universal checklist.
| Target | Evidence to prioritize | Avoid overstating | |---|---|---| | Accounting assistant | Data entry, supporting records, invoice checks, follow-up | Independent approval or full close ownership | | Staff accountant | Reconciliations, entries, close schedules, reporting support | Final sign-off if another person held it | | Accounts payable | Invoice processing, matching, supplier queries, payment support | Treasury or purchasing authority you did not have | | Accounts receivable | Billing records, cash application, account queries, collections support | Revenue recognition expertise without relevant work | | Audit or tax | Specific engagement tasks, workpapers, research, review process | A professional designation or specialist authority not held |
Entry-level accounting resume example
For a graduate with no accounting employment, place relevant education and projects before unrelated work. A concise project entry might say:
Academic Accounting Project — Example University “Prepared a trial balance and reconciliation schedules from a simulated transaction dataset, investigated differences, and documented adjustments for instructor review.”
A part-time retail job can still demonstrate transaction accuracy and responsibility: “Checked till records against the closing report and referred unexplained differences to the supervisor.” Do not turn that into “managed financial reporting” or claim a corporate accounting role.
List coursework selectively. Financial accounting, managerial accounting, audit, or tax modules can be relevant, but a transcript-style list may crowd out better evidence. Name a project when it shows how you applied the learning.
Improve accounting bullets by showing the control
Weak: “Responsible for reconciliations.”
Stronger: “Prepared monthly bank reconciliations, traced unmatched items to supporting records, and documented open differences for review.”
Weak: “Helped with audits.”
Stronger: “Compiled the requested expense schedules and supporting documents, checked references, and tracked outstanding reviewer questions.”
Weak: “Expert in Excel.”
Stronger: “Used lookup formulas and PivotTables to compare invoice records and isolate unmatched items before the close review.”
These examples show the check, exception, and review boundary. They communicate more than an inflated verb or an unsupported “zero errors” claim.
Metrics that make sense
Volume, number of entities, close cadence, account scope, and verified process improvements can be useful. A statement about reducing close time needs a real baseline, period, and contribution. Do not claim a team-wide result as your own or publish confidential financial data.
If you cannot disclose amounts, describe the process and scope without inventing substitutes. “Prepared reconciliations for the assigned balance-sheet accounts each month” is useful even without a dollar figure. Use the quantification guide to recover defensible detail.
Credentials and systems
Use CPA, chartered-accountant, or other professional designations only when you are entitled to use them. An exam candidate, exam passer, degree holder, and active licensed professional are different statuses. Follow the issuing body's rules and the employer's requirements.
For software, name the system and task: QuickBooks transaction entry, ERP account reporting, or Excel reconciliation analysis. Do not claim implementation expertise because you used the system as an end user. The computer-skills guide explains how to state capability precisely.
How to use the template
- Replace the name and contact placeholders with appropriate professional details.
- Write a short summary for the actual accounting function, or remove it if it adds little.
- Keep recent employment in reverse chronological order with accurate month-year dates.
- Replace every example prompt with an action, check, scope, or result from your work.
- Add education and genuine credentials with accurate status.
- Export the requested format, inspect the PDF, and check that copied text retains the correct order.
Do not submit the template with brackets or instructions still present. The ATS plain-text preview can help inspect extracted text, while the resume keyword matcher compares your wording with a real vacancy.
Should an accounting resume include an objective?
A concise target statement can help a graduate or career changer, but avoid generic promises. Experienced applicants usually gain more from a brief evidence-based summary or direct work history.
Can I write month-end close if I supported only one step?
Yes, qualify the scope: “month-end close support” and the specific schedule or task. Do not imply ownership of the entire close.
Is the template guaranteed to pass an ATS?
No format guarantees that. The template uses selectable text and clear sections; follow the employer's file requirements and inspect the exported document.
